Tetris Couldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification May Address This Issue

As any major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the passions of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
